Sweat itself does not smell, it is the dead skin that comes in contact and makes our skin a breeding ground for bacteria, which break down the sweat causing it to stink. Here are a few and efficient home remedies to get rid of smelly armpits.

  • Apple Cider Vinegar- Apple cider vinegar is acidic in nature and has antimicrobial properties which help in killing the odor-causing bacteria.
  • What to do?
  • Pour some apple cider vinegar in a bowl, dip a cotton ball in the vinegar and apply it to your underarm.

  • Tea Tree Oil- Tea tree oil also has antimicrobial properties that make it a great choice to get rid of underarm odor. Applying it to the underarms shrinks the pores and also fight the odor-causing bacteria.
      • What to do?
      • Mix two drops of tea tree oil with 2 tablespoons of water. Now dip a cotton ball in the mixture and apply to your underarm.

  • Baking Soda- Applying baking soda to sweaty underarms is an efficient way to stop the odor formation.
      • What to do?
      • Mix the baking soda and some lemon juice, make sure they both are in equal quantities. Just before (2-3 minutes) you take shower, apply the mixture on to your underarm.

  • Lemon Juice- Lemon is a citrus fruit thus it is highly acidic. This helps in reducing the pH of your skin and makes it free of odor-causing bacteria.

      • Rub half a lemon on your armpits and leave it to dry. Once it is dry, wash your armpits with water. In case you have a sensitive skin, you can dilute the lemon juice by adding some water to it.

  • Garlic- You would be astonished to learn that something as strong-smelling as garlic could be ward off odor and yes it is true. Garlic has antioxidants as well as antimicrobial properties which could be attributed to this amazing use.

      • The only thing you need to do with garlic to put an end to the armpit odor is to chew them. Obviously, the garlic smell would bother and counter it could instead add minced garlic to the food you eat.

  • Aloe Vera- Aloe Vera is a plant with multiple benefits such as it is an antioxidant which detoxes your body. It also has antibacterial properties which help in eliminating odor-causing bacteria.

      • Just apply some aloe vera gel on your armpits and leave it overnight. Wash it off the next morning. Aloe Vera is edible and you could drink about a quarter cup of Aloe Vera juice daily to get rid of the odor.

  • Potato- Potatoes can help control perspiration and also kill the bacteria present in your underarms by lowering the pH of your skin. This is because potatoes are slightly acidic and possess antimicrobial properties.
    • What to do?
    • Cut a potato into thin slices, apply these slices on your underarm and allow it to dry. Now wear your deodorant over it. Potatoes do not have a strong smell so you do not have to worry about wafting a bad smell.
