One of the most common medical conditions characterized by pain in the lower back is sciatica neuritis or commonly known as sciatica. Sciatica is caused by the compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, which happens to be the widest single nerve in the human body. Beginning right from the lower back, running through the buttocks, ending just above the knees makes it also the longest nerve. 

The nerve connects the skin of the legs, muscles of the thighs, legs, and feet to the nervous system. In about nine in 10 cases of sciatica, the cause is a slipped or a herniated disk. The chief symptom of sciatica is an excruciating pain that runs along the nerve from the lower back to the leg, a few others are as follows:

  • Lower back pain
  • Hip pain
  • Tingling or burning sensation in the leg
  • Numbness in the leg or foot 

Treatments for Sciatica

The treatment of sciatica depends on the severity of the pain. There can be two types of pains in sciatica; acute and chronic.

Acute sciatica pain occurs instantaneously and heals in a few days or might take up several weeks. The extremity of the pain depends on the tissue injury and the origin of it may be from nerves, muscles, ligaments, and spinal joints. Acute sciatica could be treated by the following measures:

  • OTP painkillers such as ibuprofen.
  • Walking or light stretching.
  • Applying hot or cold compression packs.

Chronic sciatica pain continues for more than 3 months and the origin of the pain might difficult to track. The pain is marked by continuity or may worsen over time. Chronic sciatica pain could be treated by:

  • Physical therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Painkillers
  • Surgery- Surgery is an option if the condition doesn’t subside.

  • Ease the symptoms
  • Avoid medications such as painkillers
